Central England, North of England & Scotland
The Lake District - Lowther Cottage: Steeped in history this charmingly quaint cottage must surely be one of the oldest properties in the area, having been built shortly after the end of the English Civil War. If you’re looking for a central location within easy travelling distance of all of the National Park this cottage will surely fit the bill. It sits prominently just above the road right in the middle of Troutbeck Bridge - the village pub is just along the road and buses stop just outside if you don’t want to use the car. The cottage itself oozes character - even the local planning officer was amazed when he saw the beams one of which he says is the biggest fire beam he has ever seen. Those of you who wish to tour the area will find plenty of routes to enjoy - with Bowness in one direction, Ambleside in the other and the road over the Kirkstone Pass starting just behind the cottage. There are walks, too, to Troutbeck up the valley and the beautiful Holehird Gardens about half a mile away where you can enjoy the national collection of hydrangeas and lovely views of Lake Windermere . Dogs are most welcome and they will surely enjoy all the walking that is available.
The bookings for this cottage are administered by Heart of the Lakes and are subject to their Conditions of Booking. A provisional booking, which will be held for one week, should be made by telephoning them on 015394 32321 and quoting brochure reference number 1130.
Four miles away in a small village called Ings is a wonderful pub, the Watermill Inn. They serve an excellent range of food, usually have a dozen or more real ales available as well as one real cider, and love dogs – one bar is open to children and the other to dogs. They brew their own beer in their micro-brewery and call it Collie Wobbles!
